Why Pre & Post Surgical Rehabilitation?

The idea of having surgery can be stressful, particularly when it comes to the recovery period and not knowing when you’ll be able to get back to feeling like your old self again.

Surgery can take a significant toll on the body, which is why it’s important to take the time to heal and properly recover. A part of this process should be post-operative physiotherapy to help reduce inflammation and swelling, restore mobility, and promote healing.

Physiotherapy is a crucial component of the post-surgical recovery period, as it not only helps patients bounce back after surgery and return to their regular activities but offers the following benefits:

  • Helps speed up recovery

  • Reduces pain and swelling

  • Improves mobility and range of motion in the area of surgery

  • Improves strength and stability

  • Reduces risk of blood clots

  • Prevents certain post-surgery complications

We have highly experienced physiotherapists that target both Pre-Op and Post-Op for surgeries such as:

  • ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) reconstructions

  • Knee replacements

  • Arthroscopies (knees and shoulders)

  • Shoulder reconstructions

  • Hip and shoulder labral repairs

  • Finger and wrist tendon surgeries

  • Ankle/Elbow and stress fracture fixation Surgeries

  • Femoroacetabular Impingement (FAI) Surgeries.

  • Knee, hip and shoulder joint replacements

  • ACL, MCL, PCL and LCL tears of the knee

  • Meniscus and arthroscopy surgery recovery

  • Shoulder post-surgical recovery for rotator cuff tears, arthroscopy and more

  • General rehabilitation after surgery

Following Pre and post op there are a number of different issues that occur as a result of pain, immobilisation, pre - operative preparations as well as post-operative restrictions.

Joints often become stiff or swollen especially after arthroscopies and lead to joints being unable to move through their full range of movement leading to associated muscles becoming tight and weak.

It is therefore important to develop a physiotherapy and rehabilitation management plan for pre and post operative surgery. This plan may involve a series of hands on therapies with tailored exercise routines to target specific movement dysfunctions.

The rehab process continuously changes as you get stronger and more flexible from the specific rehab exercises. At Revival we will assess your capacity for progression rather than following a standardised approach. This means that we will have you back doing the things you love as quickly and as safely as we can, whether it be a competitive sport, a hobby or a simple activity of your daily life.
